Attack helicopters can be a formidable threat in Arma: Reforger, but with the right tools and strategies, you can neutralize them quickly and effectively! Here’s how to make the most of your anti-air capabilities on our Unnamed servers:
Choose the Right Equipment #
- Anti-Air Weapons: Equip yourself with dedicated anti-air launchers, such as MANPADS (MAN–Portable Air Defense Systems). These are designed to track and destroy airborne targets. For team NATO, this is the FIM-92 Stinger. For team RUS, this is the IGLA.
Using MANPADS #
For the IGLA, select it from your inventory the same way you select the Stinger, “2” on the hotbar. Unlike the Stinger, the IGLA does not need target lock activated. You can simply point it in the general direction of the enemy helicopter and fire. As always, CLEAR BACKBLAST. The IGLA can not be reloaded – once fired you can drop or stow away. Once fired, you do not need to continue to track on target.

For the Stinger, select it from your inventory using “2” on your hotbar. Aim the stinger in the general direction of the enemy attack helicopter. Remember, the ordinance is heat-seeking so perfect aim is not a must! Once you’re pointed and ready to fire (remember to CLEAR BACKBLAST!) hold LCtrl to activate targeting – then fire. Take note – the Stinger is fire and forget. You do not need to continue to hold your aim on the enemy helicopter for the round to track. You are not able to reload the Stinger, once it is fired it may be dropped or put away.

- Heavy Machine Guns: Mounted machine guns can be effective against helicopters, especially when targeting vulnerable areas like rotors or engines. Put some rounds into the fuel tank to see the fireball plummet!
- 40mm Grenade Launchers: These can be surprisingly effective when used with precision, especially against low-flying helicopters. Aim for the cockpit and try to knock out the pilot – I’ve heard flying unconscious is extremely difficult!

Positioning is Key #
- High Ground: Position yourself on elevated terrain to maximize your line of sight and range. Take care to check your surroundings and make sure there are no obstacles in the path of you and the enemy helicopter such as trees, power poles, buildings, etc.
- Cover and Concealment: Use natural cover to stay hidden while preparing your shot. Helicopters often scan for threats, so avoid exposing yourself unnecessarily. Only expose yourself when you’re ready to fire!

Timing Your Attack #
- Wait for the Right Moment: Helicopters are most vulnerable when hovering or flying at low speeds. Take advantage of these moments to strike.
- Lead Your Shots: If using a machine gun or grenade launcher, aim ahead of the helicopter’s path to account for its movement. Watch for tracers if you have them loaded up, take some test shots and walk them into the rotors!
Team Coordination #
- Spotting: Work with teammates to identify and track helicopters. Use communication tools to share their location and movement. Knowing when and where the attack is coming from is half of the battle.
- Combined Arms: Coordinate with ground and air forces to distract or bait helicopters into vulnerable positions. If you have a friendly helicopter being chased down – radio them to fly over your base while you and your squad prepare your Anti-Air so once the time comes, you’ll have the perfect trap set.
Adapt to the Situation #
- Evade Counterattacks: Helicopters often retaliate with powerful weapons. After firing, relocate quickly to avoid being targeted. If you’re hiding in a building, make sure to stay away from the windows. You never know when a rocket might come flying through.
- Switch Tactics if Needed: If anti-air equipment isn’t immediately available, consider alternative methods such as creating distractions or using the terrain for temporary cover to evade aerial attacks. Adapt your strategy on the fly to survive and regroup.
