War Thunder New Player Must Have Keybinds/Settings

This guide will get you into the fight quickly with an edge on the enemy. These are recommended settings and a few keybinds that will improve your game quickly with minimal effort. We will show you all the settings you need to adjust under “Session Settings” first.

Common Battle Settings #

Under basic settings, turn on “Automatically Join Squads.” This will put you in a squad if you’re not already queued up with friends. Being in a squad gives you bonuses such as extra Silver Lions for being close to teammates when they get kills and allowing you to acquire the “Best Squad” award at the end of a game.

Turn off “Join Already Active Battles“. This will allow you to get into a battle at the start like everyone else and will give you the best chance to avoid having to fight players who are already camped up in power positions.

Air Battle Settings #

Bomb Fuze“. This is a variable setting. The setting here is the default at the start of every match. You should adjust it at the start of each air battle match or before spawning in any close air support in ground realistic battle. If you are flying close to the ground when dropping bombs, you need to adjust the fuze according to the size of bomb. Bigger bomb means you need a longer fuze. 1.5-2s is a good middle ground to start with.

Autopilot for Gunner and Bombsight Mode“. Set this to “No“. This will force level you out and when approaching with an AOA (Angle of Attack) that is not a flat plane, this will mess with your targeting from bomb site.

Empty Weapon Containers Automatic Jettison“. Set this to “Yes“. This will automatically discard any empty containers attached to your plane after you have used your payload. Example being: Zuni rocket pod being dropped off your wing after the last one is fired. This will make your plane lighter after dropping your ordinance. This will increase your ability to turn, your top speed, and your overall maneuverability.

Ground Vehicle Battle Settings #

Grass In Tank Sight” Turn this off. There is no advantage to having this on unless you’re a lawn care expert cosplaying a tank crew.
Include Commander Camera In Views ListDO NOT turn this on. There is a keybind for this that is much better to add instead of adding an extra step to returning back to 3rd person view.

Save Direction While Switching Current Trigger” Personal preference. This can allow your camera to be more stable when turned on or can allow you to have viewpoints of multiple directions when turned off. Find what works best for you.

Battle Interface #

Under battle interface, you want to make sure “Fuel Indication” and “Ammo Indication” are set to “Always“. These will not show until a certain threshold is met if set to automatic so its best to keep this always on to know where you’re sitting at on fuel and ammo before taking anymore aerial engagements. Underneath these is “Temperature Indication“. This is up to personal preference. If set to always, it can create more clutter on your screen but if set to “Automatic” you may not know you’re starting to overheat until you need to engage WEP (110% engine power) in a dogfight which may limit your capabilities during that engagement.

Measurement Units #

We highly recommend turning these all to metric. Most missiles in game, guides, and everything else will use metric. If you are more comfortable with standard, feel free to use it but conversions may be necessary for you in the future. Here is a conversion calculator if you need it.

Chat And Voice Chat #

Under Chat and Voice Chat, we recommend turning “Chat Messages” to All. Sometimes enemies get frustrated and say things in all chat that may inherently give you an advantage. Its worth while to turn this on.

Sound Settings #

There’s a few settings to go over in sound settings. Firstly, you want to adjust “Other Players Engine Volume” and “My Engine Volume“. Turn enemy engines as high as you’re comfortable with and turn your own engine all the way down.

Next, go to “Radio Chat” and set this to the highest you’re comfortable with that won’t drown out other important sounds. When playing nations that speak your native tongue, (I.e. English speakers playing America), your tank crew will sometimes give callouts like distance, type of tank, or other valuable information.

Tinnitus Volume“. There is no good use case for this setting. Its recommended to just turn it all the way to zero.

Speed Of Sound“. Set to on. Will let you hear a sonic boom letting you know there is a plane you may not have heard previously.

Recommended New Player Keybinds to set up #

Now that we’ve finished setting up your settings, lets focus on some of the keybinds and settings hidden within.

Aircraft Instructor settings #

Turn all settings to off. Instructor limits your maneuverability and combat capabilities by putting you in “easy mode”. This hinders you more than helps.

Common -> Basic keybinds #

Under controls, common and basic, look for “Set Target for Squad“. This puts a yellow arrow where you’re looking. This is great for quick callout to squad mates that will give them an exact location to look and fire.

Ground Vehicle “Weaponry” keybinds #

Lastly, head to “Ground Vehicles” and search under “Weaponry“. There you will find “Fire From Secondary Guns” and “Fire From Special Guns“. These allow you to independently shoot from your special and secondary weapons instead of firing them simultaneously with your primary.
